The final day of preparation for Round 2 of the 2026 Champion Motorsports iRacing Team Endurance Series delivered exactly the kind of uncertainty teams hoped to understand before Sunday: wet-weather running, a competitive GT3 Sprint, several surprise performers, and very few definitive answers in GTP.

Saturday at the Red Bull Ring featured Free Practice 2 followed by the non-points Sprint Race, the last competitive rehearsal before the five-hour feature on August 9. FP2: The Weather Became Part of the Preparation

Free Practice 1 had been useful for establishing the first dry-weather benchmarks. GermanPitbullzRacing Alpha led GTP at 1:21.020, while John Marjoribanks put Quokka Racing on top of GT3 at 1:29.803. Lance Williams placed cmsracing.com AM second in GT3 at 1:30.086, with Team Brake Fade and PCA Sim Racing GT3 also showing competitive early pace.

Saturday added a different kind of information. The wet conditions visible during the day's running meant teams could work through reduced grip, longer braking distances, spray and poor visibility rather than simply discussing them as possibilities. On a circuit where the major passing areas are also heavy braking zones - particularly Turns 1, 3 and 4 - that experience could be extremely valuable if conditions change during Sunday's race.

The supplied results file does not include a separate FP2 timing classification, so the practice portion of this recap is intentionally focused on what can be confirmed from the wet-weather running rather than inventing a practice leaderboard. The bigger takeaway is that teams now have real wet-track experience from the weekend before the points race begins.

Sprint Race: SimHQ Turns Fifth on the Grid into Victory

SimHQ Motorsports WHITE produced the headline result of Saturday. Shawn Harvey started fifth in the Ferrari 296 GT3, moved to the front, and led 24 of the 29 laps on the way to victory.

Harvey's fastest lap was 1:30.458, but the more important number may be the five incidents accumulated across the entire run. SimHQ combined enough pace to take control of the race with the discipline needed to stay there, eventually winning by 11.815 seconds.

The result is especially interesting in the context of the post-Homestead power rankings. SimHQ entered Red Bull Ring ranked 11th in GT3 after a steady but relatively quiet opening round. A Sprint victory does not carry championship points and does not outweigh a five-hour feature, but it is exactly the kind of performance that can change the perception of a team before the race that matters.

Longhorn Racing Chrome Responds

Longhorn Racing - Chrome finished second with Brett Stephens driving the Mercedes-AMG GT3. Stephens started fourth, completed all 29 laps, and recorded a best of 1:30.767.

Most impressive was the incident total: just one incident, the lowest of the classified Sprint finishers.

That is a timely response after a complicated Homestead weekend. Chrome originally crossed the line higher in the Round 1 order but was later assessed a 25-second post-race penalty, dropping the team behind ThumbTech Motorsport, Longhorn Racing Carbon, Sim Racers Room and Schadenfreude Fodder II in the official results. The Sprint does not restore those lost points, but second place with an exceptionally clean run gives the team positive momentum heading into five hours of racing.

cmsracing.com AM may be developing into the most interesting under-the-radar GT3 story of the weekend.

At Homestead, the team's race ended almost immediately because it was unable to field its full driver lineup before the green flag. The post-Homestead power rankings therefore placed the team only 15th despite David Nelson showing respectable raw pace during the feature.

The Red Bull Ring weekend has told a very different story so far. In FP1, Lance Williams was second-fastest in GT3 at 1:30.086. On Saturday, David Nelson started sixth in the Sprint, led five laps, and finished third with only three incidents.

Nelson also improved substantially from his FP1 benchmark. His 1:30.718 Sprint best was nearly a full second quicker than the 1:31.641 he recorded in the opening practice session.

A Sprint podium does not erase the Homestead retirement, but the pattern is becoming difficult to ignore: cmsracing.com AM has shown more Red Bull Ring speed than its championship position suggests. If Williams, Nelson and Drew Lidkea can convert that pace into a complete five-hour team effort, this could be one of the biggest potential movers on Sunday.

Schadenfreude Fodder Shows Pace but Does Not Reach the Finish

Schadenfreude Fodder and Volker Krebs completed 24 laps before disconnecting, leaving the Porsche five laps behind the winner and classified fourth.

Krebs recorded a 1:31.347 best lap, fractionally quicker than his 1:31.402 from FP1. The team enters the feature sixth in the adjusted GT3 championship with 25 points, so Sunday's goal will be converting its established pace into a complete endurance result.

Red Bull Ring Sprint - Classified Finishers

The Sprint is a rehearsal rather than a championship-points race. The iRacing export also lists Moradness Squad and SOELPEC Precision Racing with zero completed laps. GTP entries appearing under Tarcisio Carvalho and James Sauceman are both cmsracing.com Endurance; along with The Organization Racing, they recorded no Sprint laps.

What Changed from FP1?

FP1 established Quokka Racing's 1:29.803 as the GT3 weekend benchmark and placed Lance Williams, Brian Blanchette and Brandon Ogle close behind. Saturday's Sprint did not beat the Quokka benchmark, but it did reveal several teams capable of running in the low-1:30 range under race conditions.

• SimHQ: Harvey's 1:30.458 was fast enough to support a dominant race result rather than merely survive changing conditions.

More importantly, several of the teams at the top of the championship still have not shown their full hand in the Saturday Sprint. Moradness and SOELPEC were listed with zero laps, while Quokka Racing, Team Brake Fade and PCA Sim Racing GT3 did not appear among the classified Sprint runners. That makes Saturday informative - but far from predictive.

GTP: Saturday Leaves the Biggest Question Unanswered

The Sprint provided essentially no new competitive GTP data. That means the prototype outlook remains anchored to Homestead and FP1.

PCA Sim Racing 963 remains the championship and post-Homestead power-ranking leader after winning Round 1 with Chad Henson and Jonathan Waltman. PCA proved at Homestead that it can beat a faster car through complete endurance execution.

GermanPitbullzRacing Alpha remains the obvious threat. Christopher Kindler and Leon Friedrisczyk took pole at Homestead, led 118 laps, set the fastest GTP lap and finished second. Kindler then immediately set the Red Bull Ring FP1 benchmark at 1:21.020.

The Organization Racing arrives third in the championship after its surprise Homestead podium, while cmsracing.com Endurance - Tarcisio Carvalho, James Sauceman and Douglas Hintze - remains a credible contender after finishing fourth in the opener. 360 Motorsports still has one of the strongest raw-pace arguments in the field, and cmsracing.com Titanium enters Sunday still seeking its first true feature-race sample after the Homestead technical scratch.

Saturday did not settle any of those questions. Sunday's five hours will.

Power Ranking Watch: Three GT3 Teams Raised Their Stock

SimHQ Motorsports WHITE

Ranked 11th after Homestead, SimHQ now owns the final Sprint win before Round 2. The feature carries far more weight, but this is a meaningful upward signal.

Longhorn Racing - Chrome

Chrome was sixth in the post-Homestead power rankings before the later 25-second IRR penalty changed its championship result. A clean runner-up Sprint is exactly the response the team needed before the five-hour race.

No team has created a bigger gap between its championship position and its apparent Red Bull Ring pace. Williams was second in FP1, Nelson led five laps and finished third in the Sprint, and the team now has the chance to prove that Homestead was an availability problem rather than a performance problem.

Championship Stakes Entering Sunday

This is only the second race of a three-round championship. After Red Bull Ring, only the St. Petersburg Street Circuit finale remains.

That creates two very different Sunday pressures. The championship leaders cannot afford a major mistake because the season is short. The Saturday Sprint standouts, meanwhile, have an opportunity to convert momentum into the kind of feature result that can transform their season in a single afternoon.

The 50+ Championship Has a Sunday Subplot Too

David Nelson enters the feature with 16 points in the GT3 50+ standings, while teammates Lance Williams and Drew Lidkea are currently at zero after not driving Round 1. If they participate Sunday, each eligible 50+ driver will score the same points earned by the team in the feature.

Longhorn Racing Carbon teammates Larry Ford and Mike Tyler currently lead the GT3 50+ competition with 23 points each. In GTP, Chad Henson leads with 35 after PCA Sim Racing 963's Homestead victory.

Tomorrow: Five Hours, Traffic, Strategy and Possibly More Rain

The Round 2 feature begins Sunday, August 9. The race-day server opens at 15:30 GMT and the green flag is scheduled for 17:00 GMT.

The Red Bull Ring is only 10 corners long, and that compact layout should create repeated GTP-versus-GT3 traffic cycles over five hours. The same Turns 1, 3 and 4 that provide obvious overtaking opportunities can also become conflict points when prototypes arrive on GT3 battles at large speed differentials.

Saturday's wet running adds another layer. Rain remains uncertain for the feature, but teams are no longer preparing for it only in theory. They have now seen the spray, visibility loss and reduced braking grip the circuit can produce.

Revised Code 60 Procedure Debuts in a Points Race

Sunday will also be the first iRTES feature under the simplified Code 60 procedure developed after Homestead. Cars will remain rolling on the pit limiter, pit lane will remain open unless Race Control closes an entry or exit because of an incident, and the Code 60 countdown will be delivered by radio rather than an on-screen message.

Once the field is controlled, GTP cars behind the overall leader may be instructed to carefully clear GT3 traffic and form behind the GTP leader in their existing order. GT3 cars will then catch the rear of the GTP line, with the first GT3 maintaining the required five-to-seven-second separation. There will be no stopping, wave-bys or unnecessary sorting on track.

That procedure should simplify the neutralization process, but it also makes discipline critical. With five hours, a short lap and the possibility of changing weather, Race Control decisions and Code 60 timing could have a major strategic effect.

Final Outlook

Saturday did not produce a simple hierarchy. Instead, it made Round 2 more interesting.

SimHQ Motorsports WHITE won the Sprint from fifth. Longhorn Racing Chrome answered a frustrating post-Homestead penalty with an exceptionally clean runner-up finish. cmsracing.com AM continued to show that its Round 1 result may dramatically understate its actual pace. And the established championship leaders largely kept their feature-race cards close to their chest.

In GTP, the central Homestead question remains unchanged: can GermanPitbullzRacing turn raw speed into a victory, or will PCA Sim Racing 963 once again win the race through execution? In GT3, the field looks even less predictable after Saturday's result.

Now the sprint calculations disappear. Sunday is about five hours, full team lineups, traffic, pit strategy, Code 60 discipline, and possibly weather.

Round 2 is ready to become a championship-defining race.
