Welcome to the CMS Mazda MX5 Championship! Below, you will find all of the info you need about this new series, and how to join.

At Champion Motorsports, we have had a long history of racing all types of cars and series, but one thing that we focus on is making sure that newcomers to sim-racing feel like they have found a home, a place to grow their driving abilities and racecraft, and not feel pressured to be fast or get out of the way. We love this hobby of ours, and we want to share that with everyone.

This series will bring back one of our past projects, the Driver Development Program (DDP), which will be a session where any driver can sign up as a student, and one of our experienced members will be available to coach them during a one-hour practice session. After the practice, the students will have a race to carry over what they learned in practice, as well as getting that very valuable seat time.  These sessions will used a fixed setup so the focus is solely on the driving and decision making during a race.

There will also be a second session for all drivers to join, using Open setups, with practice, qualifying, and a longer race session with a pit stop. The students of course are very welcome to jump in and add to their experiences.

The Open series will have championship points awarded separately for Students and non-Students. The Student races will not have any points or championships, as we want to focus on the learning and fun, there!

We hope that everyone sees the positives in what this series is trying to do, and will take advantage of the offerings from some of our best pilots who are offering to help out each week with anyone who would like a little coaching.

Signups are required, and we are using a separate iRacing league, so please carefully follow the directions below.

How to Participate

All drivers must click the button above and complete the registration form, even if you have registered for other seasons or series.

When signing up, you will have the option to register as a Student. If accepted, you will be eligible to join the Student/Novice races, and you will also be eligible to join the Driver Development Program practices where coaches (lead by Max Muir) will give group and personalized instruction to help you get faster and learn critical racecraft skills to make you a better league racing driver overall.

Please request membership to the CMS Friday league in iRacing, if you are not already a member. Membership on the CMS Discord is also a requirement, as that is where we will send out race briefings and other important news.

There is no cost to race in this series, beyond of course your iRacing membership and any content you do not yet own. If you wish to support CMS, you can click the Donate button on the left sidebar! Running a league of this size has costs, so every little bit is greatly appreciated and helps us provide bigger and better things

Some details may be changed on a per-race basis. Please read the posted race briefing for the race carefully! Briefings are posted on Discord before each race.

  • Dynamic sky and weather, as well as a random track starting state
  • Race session date and time will be included in the briefing (and see the table, above)
  • We will use a formation lap / rolling start format for all races. Be sure you read the rules regarding start procedures.
  • Drivers meeting will be held just before qualifying, using iRacing voice chat. All drivers must have voice chat enabled/unmuted during this period.
  • Voice chat during the race must be kept to a minimum (emergency safety callouts only).
  • Come to the drivers’ lounge (🎧Mazda channel on Discord) after the race to hang out with some of your fellow racers. (Optional, but we don’t bite!)

  • Fixed setups
  • One fast repair per race
  • iRacing will automatically give you a Drive Thru penalty every 15x incident points

Please consult the points table for details. You must complete 50% of your class race winner’s laps to earn points.

Rules and Regulations

We follow all league rules as specified in the General Competition Rules at CMS, as well as the iRacing Sporting Code. All members are expected to understand and follow these rules at all times.

Everyone must be aware of the Orange Zone (OZ) for each race, as published in the drivers’ briefing. Serious incidents that occur in the OZ will be reviewed, and the stewards will impose higher penalties for any driver found to be at fault for an incident in the OZ.

Series Administrators

Your iRacing Wednesday night administrators are:

  • Tim Collier – Team lead
  • Ryan Thompson – Support, Steward liaison.
  • James Andrew
  • Brian Szabelski
  • Liam Park
  • Pierre Robitaille
  • Max Muir – Head Coach

Please don’t hesitate to contact us via DM if you have any questions or concerns.

Note that—by design—we have no say over penalties or other stewards’ decisions. If you have a question about a steward (IRR) ruling, please visit the CMS RRC Discord and click the #irr-follow-up channel, or DM the Chief Steward (Jon Uyan). Please do not discuss incidents in public channels.

This series has been created for one purpose only: fierce, friendly competition on the track with like-minded racers, providing a place for everyone to race and have a great time doing so. We are all friends, here.

While we have rules in place, we also don’t intend to add complication or pressure to perform on race night. We all started sim-racing from scratch, and regardless of your experience we want everyone to feel welcome here. So please, come in and make some friends and we’ll see you on the track!
