Welcome to the second season of the CMS Mazda MX5 Championship!

This series will carry on where our successful first season left off, with competitive cars on circuits suited for their abilities in 45-minute battles to the checkers!

One big difference from last season is the change in classifications for entrants.  This season we will have a Gold Class and a Silver Class, each with their own points Championship battle over the 8 race season!

After the second pre-season race, the admins will assign classifications to each driver for the start of the season. After the second race any changes between classifications will be discussed with the driver(s) before any changes are made.

The thing to remember is that the classifications do not change the racing; each position is for points based on an overall finishing position, so you race everyone on the track without concern for classifications.

There’s also a change in the points system, with bonus points awarded, so be sure to read that section below.

Signups are required for this series although if you raced with us in Season 1 there is no need to re-register.

How to Participate

All drivers must click the button above and complete the registration form, even if you have registered for other seasons or series.

Please request membership to the CMS Monday league in iRacing, if you are not already a member. Membership on the CMS Discord is also a requirement, as that is where we will send out race briefings and other important news.

There is no cost to race in this series, beyond of course your iRacing membership and any content you do not yet own. If you wish to support CMS, you can click the Donate button on the left sidebar! Running a league of this size has costs, so every little bit is greatly appreciated and helps us provide bigger and better things

Race Details

Some details may be changed on a per-race basis. Please read the posted race briefing for the race carefully! Briefings are posted on Discord before each race.

  • Dynamic sky and weather, as well as a random track starting state
  • Race session date and time will be included in the briefing (and see the table, above)
  • We will use a formation lap / rolling start format for all races. Be sure you read the rules regarding start procedures.
  • Drivers meeting will be held just before qualifying, using iRacing voice chat. All drivers must have voice chat enabled/unmuted during this period.
  • Voice chat during the race must be kept to a minimum (emergency safety callouts only).
  • Come to the drivers’ lounge (🎧Mazda channel on Discord) after the race to hang out with some of your fellow racers. (Optional, but fun!)
  • Qualifying will be 2 solo laps within a 10 minute session
  • Open setups
  • One fast repair per race
  • 45 minute races
  • iRacing will automatically give you a Drive Thru penalty every 17x incident points.

Points

Please consult the points table for details. You must complete 50% of your class race winner’s laps to earn points. In addition to the points table, bonus points will be awarded for the following:

  • Pole position (each class) – 2 points
  • Fastest Lap of the Race (each class) – 2 points
  • Fewest Incidents (overall) – 2 points (if tied, 1 point to each lowest)
  • Zero Incidents – 1 additional point!

Note: To be eligible for the Fast Lap and Incident Point bonuses, you must finish the race!

These bonus points can add up over the season and make a difference in the Championship!

Last but not least, one race result will be dropped over the course of the 8-race season, so your 7 best results will determine your final points total.  This includes the dropping of bonus points tied to the result that was dropped.

Rules and Regulations

We follow all league rules as specified in the General Competition Rules at CMS, as well as the iRacing Sporting Code. All members are expected to understand and follow these rules at all times.

Everyone must be aware of the Orange Zone (OZ) for each race, as published in the drivers’ briefing. Serious incidents that occur in the OZ will be reviewed, and the stewards will impose higher penalties for any driver found to be at fault for an incident in the OZ.

Series Administrators

Your iRacing Wednesday night administrators are:

  • Tim Collier – Team lead
  • James Andrew
  • Brian Szabelski
  • Liam Park
  • Pierre Robitaille
  • Max Muir – Head Coach

Please don’t hesitate to contact us via DM if you have any questions or concerns.

Note that—by design—we have no say over penalties or other stewards’ decisions. If you have a question about a steward (IRR) ruling, please visit the CMS RRC Discord and click the #irr-follow-up channel, or DM the Chief Steward (Ryan Thompson). Please do not discuss incidents in public channels.

This series has been created for one purpose only: fierce, friendly competition on the track with like-minded racers, providing a place for everyone to race and have a great time doing so. We are all friends, here.

While we have rules in place, we also don’t intend to add complication or pressure to perform on race night. We all started sim-racing from scratch, and regardless of your experience we want everyone to feel welcome here. So please, come in and make some friends and we’ll see you on the track!
