Thread: A little help?

    Default A little help?

So...Iíve got an idea and it may not be a good one. But Iíll throw it out there.

When I raced with you guys many years ago, and again now, itís clear that there are some seriously talented racers here. Both then and now I would watch those of you who are very fast carefully and try to learn. Iíve learned a lot. I believe I understand the racing line, and how to adjust for weight shift and tire wear now. These used to be big mysteries to me. But itís clear that I still donít fully understand corners. I know the line, but I donít get entry and apex right. My problem, I think, is knowing where the edge is and driving on it, pushing it just enough.

Of course, thatís likely the single key difference between being a great racer and being mediocre, like me.

At any rate, this doesnít appear to be something I can learn from just watching others, even when watching replays from cockpit views. When I watch, it seems I drive the same line, and mostly hit the same braking points, but apparently donít control my braking and carry speed very well, losing too much speed or not enough, losing time or control.

So, since we are racing the MX-5 fixed on off Wednesdays, it seems to me like a great opportunity and car for learning precisely these key elements. Lap times in this car seem to be almost completely about conserving momentum and driving at, but not beyond, the edge.

    So....my idea:

I wonder if any of the fast guys would be willing to spend an hour or so spectating while I (or others interested) drive the MX-5 around the track for a given race to observe and coach on technique? Say, for $10 iRacing credit?

I know that being fast and being a good teacher are not necessarily found in the same package. And maybe the fast guys just arenít interested in such an activity. But itís a great group of people here, so I thought Iíd throw the idea out there to see if anyone might be interested.

This is a great idea Phil, and I'd like to expand on that.

On the night before the race (all races this season) is a 3-hour practice session for that week's race. That could be a great time for everyone who is on the server to talk about racing line, braking, gears, setup tweaks, and so forth....but it takes participation on the part of those who have the knowledge. So I ask those of you, the perennial front-runners, if possible the sharing if your knowledge and answering of questions that could help those of us who are looking to gain tenths and more.

And I know that Tuesday nights may not work for everyone, and for now we're using Tuesday for the pre-race practices...but if we need to move it to Monday, or someone wants to host a Monday session every week, post it!

As Phil said so well, this is the opportunity for the league to work together, help out with the sharing of experience and knowledge, and make the league even better for everyone.

Phil im willing to help you with pleasure and no need to compensate, i would suggest doing it on the gt3 car your using and then get in the same track with the miata just to polish smootness and technique of steering, braking and gas..

Use a track like laguna that you have lots of data to compare from this race

I would love to help as much as I can and no need for the credits just for the sake of helping

What a fast and helpful set of responses! This is a great community!

I like Tim's idea as well. Unfortunately, for me, Tuesday nights are my years long air combat nights with my IL2 BoX group. But perhaps I can miss a few Tuesdays from that group. Anyway, that idea seems very good to me. A combined practice, mentoring session!

Miguel and Humberto, I very much appreciate your offers! I know I can learn a lot from both of you. I think doing both the GT3 (AMG for me) and the MX-5 is a very good idea, Miguel. Iím very happy to do Laguna, since I have our recent experience there and so have a base for comparison.

Iím on summer vacation now, so my time is pretty open. If you guys let me know a convenient time for you, Iíll be there! I know we have a time difference, but Iím flexible.

I would say we should have a Monday night Driver Development each week, but there's so many other series' running here I don't want to schedule anything over them.

So I would suggest, anytime someone is putting up a session for practice, and I know many do this already, just share it here (and on Discord!) so that others can come in and benefit as well.

I'd also suggest that you password it, or limit it to league members of Champion Motorsports and Texas League.
