    Default Strange Problem

I have/had two installs of rFactor. One a full 1255 version with many mods and tracks, etc., and an rFactorLite version that I used only for ILMS. A few days ago, I tried to start my ILMS version, but after a few seconds my computer froze. I rebooted and tried the full version and the same thing happened.

After some other problems evolving around my Avira anti-virus program I uninstalled both versions. I have reinstalled an rFactorLite, but the same thing happens. Anyone have any ideas?

If you are using vista try setting the exe to run as an admin. See if that makes a difference.

Have you tried to start rFactor after turning off the anti-virus program? I would turn off all programs running in the background and see if you can get it to work; if so, then add a program at a time and see if one of them is causing the problem. The anti-virus program sounds like a candidate.

There is a free program called End it all that you can use to turn off everything that is not needed.

EDIT: Have you changed drivers recently? Some folks with Nvidia cards have reported lockups and blame the drivers. I have never experienced this problem and I have an Nvidia card and use XP Pro. But I use the original driver files that came with the card.

Here's an entire thread devoted to rFactor related lockups:

    Good luck finding the problem.

Thanks, Charlie. I'd removed the anti-virus program entirely at one point, but things wouldn't work then either. The only other thing I recently added was an update to OpenOffice and a couple of skins.

That thread is an old one about in-game freezes.

And speaking of RFC, I can't get my login to stay. I'd log in and read the rules and then try to open a thread on this same subject and it would log me off and tell me to read the rules. Catch-22, I tell ya.

This is a longshot, but you might check to make sure that your Antivirus program did not change your permissions on programs that are allowed. I would check the firewall, then check the Antivirus program, to make sure that rFactor is a permitted application. I don't know how rFactor works, but some applications that permit online play periodically try to access ports. Your AV program might have blocked something.

That thread also deals with freezes on startup. Here is one response in that thread to someone who had a startup problem:

When you update to 1255, ensure you re-add rfactor to your av/fw exclusion list since some software will detect it as a completely new program and block its access.

When reinstalling, be sure to delete the entire rfactor folder prior to installing so that you are installing into a new clean folder.

You can find a list of common startup issues here.

I thought the firewall might have been the problem originally. It asked permission when I opened rF and I might have pushed the deny button. In any event, after resintalling the antivirus program and getting it straightened out, it asked again when I tried to open the new install of rFlite. I gave permission and the same thing happened again.

    Onward, this shall be solved.

Which skins did you add,if they were from the zipped up submissions thread that was used for collecting skins, then they should not have been downloaded and installed as they had not been checked.?

If that was the case you will have to re-install the full CMS main skinpack and then download and install the now corrected, checked and released World skinpack.

They were from the world submissions thread, but since I can't even get rFactor to start and tried to reinstall it, I will have to download the skinpacks anyway.
