Default rFactor Lite vs rFactor Ignition

I just reformatted and reinstalled Windows and now it's time to reinstall rFactor.

I was using rFactor Ignition to manage all my mods (cars). It's a nice frontend for the game and allows you to select any of the car mods from a simple interface and then launch the game using that mod. It only requires one install of the original game and then you just place each mod car in the Cars directory and the Ignition program detects new mods as they are installed and adds them to the master list.

So, what is the advantage of doing multiple installs for each separate mod using rFactor Lite versus what I am describing with Ignition?

    Hi Bill,

Well , right off the top of my head I would say that doing multipple installs for each mod is the more fullproof approach. With your method if the core rFactor install gets corrupted for whatever reason you have lost use of all your mods. With multiple installs for each mod you lower your risk, and I also would assume that by doing it your way your increasing the odds of a corruption in the 1st place?

Also I think that having each mod installed in its own instance of rFactor lite probly makes the game boot and run quicker/smoother as there is not so much bloat.

Thats my .02 anyway. But then again Im a bit paranoid

I concur. I always found it much easier to use rF lite and have multiple installations for each mod, with a central location for tracks, etc...

Thanks, guys, I'll look into it. It just looks like all those installs eats a ton of hard drive space.

Not really. The rF lite version is...well...lite

It's the cars and tracks that take up the most space.

I read the directions that were posted in another thread by Phil.

I'm not totally clear on the beginning of the procedure. Do I still install the full-boat of rFactor from my original installer and then do the separate Lite installs within a dir inside of the main rFactor install?

I don't want to mess it up from the get-go...

    Install rF full...

    Install rF Lite...

Take rfactor.exe from full install folder and put in lite folder (replace lite version exe).

Run lite, create a driver and set all the configurations as you want them to be...

Install and configure all plugins you want to use into the lite folder...

Once you have a lite version that is running as you want it to be running, use WinZip/WinRAR/7zip to make an archive of the directory (I save mine as rF clean.7z)...

This is your base install, keep it clean and safe and use it to start each new mod installation (small, about 120 MB)...

I have found that by installing every mod as a standalone and just aliasing the tracks directory in the config.ini to some common tracks directory has resulted in a far more manageable rF mod usage experience. Install a mod and if it inhales vigorously, delete it without screwing anything else up.
