Default rFactor and CMS.. I need some advice

First of all, I am a POR guy BUT I want to set a goal in 2012 to start participating in some events to broaden my racing experience and have some fun over here. I have rFactor so should I...

Get rid of it because rfactor2 is gonna be released?

Should I do a fresh install? I have a bunch of CMS stuff already downloaded. I think someone maybe Brian or Troy... no it was James said in a thread "you need to do a fresh install for this mod". Really? I have an internet version download of the game.

I need to get smarter about how to "Use" rfactor. I have done my research here but unfortunately just like Richard Burns Rally topics, it seems most make the assumption that I have graduated high school already. When Brian talks, lol and I look at his Avatar, I dont even know if I understand english (Cheers Brian). Its way over my head.

So can someone point me in the right direction so I can have a few weeks before the new year to digest this monster called rfactor?

    Thanks in advance. CMS Rocks!

DON'T wait for rF2. It's going to be awhile before we adopt it here for our primary racing series. I would recommend a "Fresh" install of rFactor as it has already been suggested. I would also recommend installing rFactor Lite.

Tip: Install a fully funtional, licensed copy, of rFactor lite, then back up that folder somewhere. Then whenever you need a "Fresh" install, you can just copy that folder onto your C:\ drive and rename it. Instant "Fresh" install.

I have three complete rFactor lite installs. The first one is located in c:\CMS and the second is C:\ERL. That way I have an install for the CMS Enduracers mod and one for the Endurance Racing League (ILMS mod). I also have a third install, c:\TEST. That's where I install tracks, cars, mods, that I want to test first. You get the idea. If you managed to get RBR working, you shouldn't have any problem with rFactor. Also, there are some pretty detailed instructions on how to install the CMS Enduracers mod and all the files you need are here.

Lastly, if your serious about getting involved in the North American and/or World Division series and you don't mind driving a Spyker...I'd like to officially extend an offer for you to join Spyker International. Nick Newcombe and I had a very successful season together and there is always room for one more. At least that way you don't have to worry about liveries or setups and you can concentrate on driving. I'll warn you though, not everyone is as enamored with the Spyker as much as I am.

Troy described it well. You want an install of rfactor to not have more than 2-4 mods or things start slowing down and sometimes acting funny. I also edit my config file in each install to point to a single place for all my tracks. Putting all your tracks in one install has no effect on rfactor, so that is convenient.

As far as racing, if you are interested in the Le Mans style, join Troy for sure. Having a good teammate to share setups is a big plus. But the Le Mans series is the deep end of the pool, both due to the challenge of the mod but also the sheer number of cars on the track and the multiclasses. The Fun Series and DDP are more laid back racing to just come out and drive and learn.

More times than not, it will work superbly. However, certain mods have been known to not play well with others and when that happens, it is a real pain in the a$$ to start over. Of course, these issues usually rear their ugly heads about an hour before a scheduled race.

Yes, but it's not something I would recommend to the uninitiated. You really need to understand the rFactor folder structure or it's easy to run into problems.

If you are interesed in some Historics races count on me for anything you want to know-
by now we are in the winter(summer for me...) break, But Historics can provide you some great races whit smaller fields ,giving you the opportunity to train you to be in better shape for the more professional Le Mans Series

    Rick,

Good advice I agree with all above.

I use a seperate install of rFactor lite for each mod. I do a fresh install for each season at CMS.

I have one install with about 6 different mods in it, and it takes 5 times longer to load than my "single mod" installs.

Also by doing the seperate installs for each mod you eliminate the potential that some addon you like for one mod, will not play nice with another mod.

As for one central location for tracks: I do not recomend it unless you are very experienced with the folder structure of rFactor and editing config.ini files. as if your not careful you can run into problems.

PS: when you purchased your download version of rFactor it should have left you with an rFactorsetup.exe. If you saved it you can do as many installs as you like as long as you still have the same PC?

Also like Troys idea of having one install just for testing. I do the same. If Im trying a new addon I always try it out there 1st before installing it in my "league" install.
