That sucks. I went through nearly the same thing with a windows update. I bought a backup hard drive and copied the whole rfactor directory to it. Now I just keep it safe for instances like yours.
    Good luck on the recovery.

If you are going to re-format,then before you do it,make sure that you have the original purchase email that contains your order number and reactivation code backed up to other drive or floppy.
Then also go to User Data\Application Data\TryMedia and backup the TryMedia folder.
Then backup your whole rFactor folder to another drive.
    Then do the reformat etc.
After installing widows copy back the TryMedia folder and your rFactor folder [to the same place as before is better].
If you are asked to reactivate it on running, just cut and paste your re-activation code from the email details and give the reason as "reformatted HDD" and you should be ok.

Depending on your install you may also have rFactor's UserData folder in your user's documents folder rather than in rFactor's. In this case you'd want to backup that too.

Before having to resort a reformat (which isn't a bad idea to do every year or so, anyway, for system health reasons), what is your certainty that you have a virus? Do you have any anti-virus software that is able to identify the virus or spyware that you have? Most viruses (i.e. >98%) and spyware are able to be removed by antmalware programs (e.g. Norton, AVG, Kaparsky, etc.).

I'd hate to see you waste all that time if you don't have to!

Try the above if you have nvidia graphics.
Glad that my other post helped you with the trymedia stuff.
