Part way into the RoadOne International 90 Minute Enduro, the driver of the #12 Pennzoil BMW came walking down pit lane and up to his crew chief. He said, “If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all.” Then retired to his trailer and a tall cocktail.
Bummer. Thought I had an excellent shot at a podium. Had a good car and a plan. Run clean, one stop, maybe. Good start and, once again, was following the old professor - David Anderson. Cool, I’ll just roll along behind him. After a few laps the plan needed a minor adjustment after a tail waggle leading to terminal oversteer spun me off. OK. Lost a position so now I’ll follow Jonathan Backof for awhile. Just be smooth.
On lap eight coming down the hill into the esses saw a yellow. Feathered off the gas, saw the car was not in my line, hit the pedal to get a run on the last corner and got tagged from behind. The #12 BMW spun off track and smacked the wall head on. Not good. But the pits were close.
Had the crew fix part of the damage. Went back out and the car wandered all over the track. Came back in. Now it would go mostly straight, although a little squirrelly in a couple corners. Tried to soldier on, but had to fight the car too much and was becoming a hazard. Called it quits. Wait till next week.
An observation. Trying to pass on the outside at corner exit is not a good bet. If I drive my line through the corner correctly my speed will carry me to the outside edge of the track, closing it off. If I try to pinch the car at the exit it may go unstable. If you pass to the inside at corner exit, no problems.
