    Default Icehockey talk

Any Icehockey fans here on the forums?

Tonight the 2011/2012 NHL season is going to start and I hope for another successful year for my two favorite teams, Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames!

In Germanys' DEL I'm a fan of our local team, Nuernberg Ice Tigers, but they had a horrible start to the season and are ranking absolutely bottom of the list. Going to watch the next game live in the stadium tomorrow though .

I'm a big Capitals fan. I went to a Caps game back in 1983' at the old Cap Centre in Landover, Maryland. I've been a fan ever since. Besides racing, European Soccer and the NHL are really the only professional sports I follow these days. Baseball is too slow (Plus I'm a Cubs fan, so not much to root for there), the NFL takes itself far too seriously, and the NBA is flat out boring. I like pretty much all college sports and any sport with woman...but not the WNBA!

Nice to see, I like the Capitals too, not my favorite team but especially since they changed their logo and jerseys they just look so cool on ice. Wanted to buy an Ovechkin-jersey a year ago but if you want to buy a NHL-jersey in Europe you have to pay twice the price - not including shipping!

You might remember they evan had a german goaltender with Olaf "Olie the Goalie, Godzilla, Ziggy" Kölzig who played 18 years for the caps and in our national-team aswell .

Our past Nuernberg goalie Marc Seliger was drafted by the caps aswell, but he had not big career in NHL, despite being goalie of the tournament at Olympic Games 2002 and best player of the team in 2002, also lifting the national-team from B-World Championships in 2000 to A-Level almost all alone.

Have to say it was the first NHL game I ever seen live this night with Flyers vs. Bruins and was quite happy with the result. Boston dominated the start easily and I lost all my hope already until 6 minutes to the end of the first period when the Flyers started to smash the Bruins. The atmosphere in the stadion seemed a bit too quiet to me then, after all the Stanley-Cup-Glory-Party before the game, the Bruins not really made their fans happy then .

What do you think, Topscorer of the year? In the past it was many to choose but few to come, this year there seems to be a HUGHE number of players able to top the leaderboards at the end of the season.

Olie was awesome! Probably the most talented goalie to ever wear a Caps uniform and one of my all-time favorite players. With the exception of 8 games for the Lightning, Olie played his entire NHL career with the Caps (14 years!). Back in the early 90's, he played a couple years for our local ECHL team, the Hampton Roads Admirals. He was elected into the ECHL Hall of Fame last year and if memory serves me correctly, he won the Vezina Trophy in 1999-2000.

Kolzig was probably one of my favorite goalies as well. Hockey is personally my favorite sport to watch other than racing. My favorite team oddly enough is the Flyers, and to make it even more interesting with this thread, my dad's is the Capitals. As a result one of the two hockey games I've been to was a Flyers and Caps game a couple years ago and I did get to see Ovechkin (he is a big big dude), and he scored. I was actually lucky enough where the other game I went to, I saw my favorite player at that time John LeClair score, and that goal made him surpass someone on the flyers all time goals list (Brind'amour I think idk).
I'm glad the Flyers went back to their orange uniforms, hated the black ones. However I did like the Capitals home Black and brown uniforms with the Capital building on it those were nice.

Back from the game Nuernberg Ice Tigers vs. Krefeld Penguins... horrible performance again. They had their chances and even scored a second goal but the referee said it doesn't count and gave us a 2min penalty instead, lol. So instead of 2:0 it stayed 1:0 for us, until Krefeld went for the offence for the first time in 40 minutes and scored immediately a 1:1 and 1:2 so we lost the game. Have to say even if we would have won, we wouldn't deserve it... Krefeld is the only team which had a similar bad season so far and even they outplayed us.

I liked both the red and the orange Flyers-jerseys. The black ones were horrible, I agree . Considered to buy one in the states and let it ship over to europe as even that is cheaper than buying it here. But even though I like the orange, I don't like the design that much, prefer the looks of the Flames-jersey .

Anyone seen the Flyers game tonight vs. Winnipeg? God that was awesome, wasn't it?

It was a festival of goals, including an amazing period in the game with 5 goals in 4 minutes:

    ---------------Start---------------
    Philadelphia Flyers 1:0 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 1:1 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 1:2 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 1:3 Winnipeg Jets
    ------------Intermission------------
    Philadelphia Flyers 1:4 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 1:5 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 2:5 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 2:6 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 3:6 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 4:6 Winnipeg Jets
    ------------Intermission------------
    Philadelphia Flyers 5:6 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 6:6 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 7:6 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 7:7 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 7:8 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 8:8 Winnipeg Jets
    Philadelphia Flyers 8:9 Winnipeg Jets
    ------------End of Game------------

What really stunned me were the Flyers being able to get back into the lead after a 5-goal-disadvantage just about 25 minutes into the game. They lost the last game badly by 1:5 but this time they were fighting back which was great to watch, despite their 7:6 lead not lasting for any longer than 2 minutes. Another two minutes later the Jets took the lead by scoring two goals within a couple of seconds, until the Flyers tied the game again. Sadly, about 1 1/2 minutes to the end the Jets made their game deciding goal.

Still seems to be a problem with the Flyers way of using chances. They are mostly the better team on ice in every game so far, but as for example in this game, the Jets made 9 goals with 23 shots on goal, whilst the Flyers had to shoot twice as much (47 shots) to score one goal less. That seems to be the major problem so far this season, the same story goes for Calgary even though their main problem seems to be they haven't changed the team much since last season and their goalie Miika Kiprusoff has played more games than any other goaltender in the past 5 years - and that last season ended without playoff participation.
