“For years, every sim-racer’s dream has been to compete in a race or series of races with the best in the world. iRacing brought this vision to a reality this past Wednesday when iRacers from around the globe competed head to head in a Who’s Who of the sim-racing community.”
Those aren’t the words of the iRacing public relations machine. They’re the opening lines of an e-mail sent to iRacing by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. shortly after the debut of the iRacing Pro Series for Ovals(iPSO) on the evening of August 5.
No fewer than ninety of iRacing’s best oval racers from the Carolinas to California, Austria to Australia, signed-on for the opening round of the 2009 iPSO at Daytona International Speedway. With the field split into three iterations of the race with thirty iRacers in each, the action was nothing short of electrifying. Brad Davies, Derek Wood, Tyler Hudson and John Gorlinsky all led one race before Davies took the win from Jesse Atchison, TJ Majors, Wood and Earnhardt. Similarly, Patrick Baldwin and Bryan Blackford swapped the lead four times in their race before Baldwin led the lap that really counted ahead of Blackford, Matthew Bradley, Andrew Fayash III and Derek Cash. And while Jeff Dukehart led from flag-to-flag in the other race, his margin of victory over Jordan Erickson was a scant .095s with Brad Wright, Ken ODoherty and Richard Towler in their draft.

“It’s great to have a venue in which people can see that the world’s best sim-racers have all the skills that real-world pro racers have,” said Dave Kaemmer, co-founder of iRacing.com. “These guys make it look easy, just like the pros, by driving with unbelievable precision, just like the pros. In fact, they are the pros, now!
“Racing simulation has been a passion of mine for a long time. I’ve always wanted to show people what it’s like to drive race cars. Now everyone can try to climb the ladder of motorsport, and test themselves against the best.”
“I couldn’t be happier about the start of the iRacing Pro Series,” said John Henry, co-founder of iRacing.com. “Together with the rest of the sim-racing community, Dave Kaemmer and I have dreamed about this day for a long time, and many dedicated people worked very hard to turn our dreams for the iPS into a reality. If the first few races are any indication, the reality is even better than the dream.”
Take it from Earnhardt, that’s no exaggeration.
“No kidding, my nerves were really on edge as I got ready for the start,” he said. “As we all gridded to start this race, I think the real weight of the situation started to make its mark. After the race got going, every lap was a very stressful experience, as it should be. I think we all had fun, and I think a lot of people truly got a grip on the weight of the occasion and got a kick out of being a part of it. I know I sure did.”
The excitement has only begun. For the next 24 weeks, the world’s best sim-racers will compete up to four times a week in the iPSO and iPSRR, all with an eye on finishing as one of the top fifty oval or road racers who will earn a spot in the inaugural 2010 iRacing World Drivers Championship which begins in February.
