Lap three of seventy-five at Martinsville. I'm in the black #5 and the #9 is Colin Gorton. Colin and I have raced one another many times and I don't fault him for the contact. It's a very tight track and we're both on cold tires. However, this little bit of contact cost me - 0.41 to my Safety Rating. ouch!
I'm not complaining about the contact or the way the SR is handled, but there could be a little be more leeway when it comes to short track racing. The SR is great at detering bad behaviour, but contact on these short tracks is almost unavoidable. It two successive races, with similar incidents, both of which I feel were out of my control, I have incurred a grand total of - 0.63 hit to my SR.
So, not only does the SR discourage poor driving, it also has the effect of discouraging me from participating in events that have a high expectation of contact. All I'm suggesting is that there be a little more wiggle room on the short tracks.
I've been in some similar situations, Short Tracks and Rookie drivers mainly. Having a big SR hit at these discourages continued participation for a while.
It happened with my on the road side recently too, but i've posted that in my blog.
