Last night at Phoenix, I got my very first start from pole in the truck series. Of course, that was mostly because there were only two of us with qualifying times, but hey, a pole is a pole.
Anyway, there was an early caution and I decided to stay out, even though the entire field pitted behind me. Consequently everyone was on fresh tires and I was just hoping to stay in the top five until the next caution. I was holding my own, just cruising around, when the second place truck caught me and made his move to the inside exiting turn 2.
I gave him plenty of room (I thought) and I had planned on letting him slip by in turn three, then jump in behind him exiting turn 4. Unfortunately, we never got that far. Maybe he thought I was trying to hang onto the position, but he drove it in pretty deep and slid up the track, punting me into the wall. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but it sucked just the same.
After the wreck, the truck was still drivable, but the toe was way out. Several stops/adjustments later, I managed to struggle to a 7th place finish...but oh, what could have been.
