Since the HD only has data on it, I would think about installing Vista without the HD plugged in. Get Vista up and running ( as close as you can run with Vista...
) then power down, plug in the data HD and bring it back up. At least that way Vista won't decide on it's own that 'Hey a HD, I AM THE OS IT IS MINE!' and proceeds to do dastardly deeds to your important data. Not saying that it won't do that anyway when you plug it in after install, but there's less of a chance...
