    Default "To please a lady"

    FYI,

I just happened to catch the last 10mins or so of this movie on TCM, made in 1950, starring Clark Gable and Barbara Stanwyck. (B&W)

I know, can't wait to see it right? Well its about a race car driver falling for a woman. I don't know what was in the rest of the movie but what I saw was a race at the Indy track of the 50's. Pretty good closeups of cars and ok sounds. There were a couple of wrecks, and a pretty good pitstop with a pit fire. After an accident, Clark was on a bed, in the field hospital getting his leg bandaged, smoking a cigarette, lol.

Interesting to see the cars and track in that era.

This is a interesting movie from a historical standpoint. The story line is pretty thin and it's really kind of boring, but it's cool to see all the old cars, despite the fact that much of the racing scenes seems staged. I wouldn't race out and buy the DVD, but it's not horrible either.

I consider Grand Prix and LeMans two of the greatest auto racing movies ever produced, while Driven is the most wretched piece of crap to hit the big screen. To Please a Lady falls somewhere in between.

Totally agree with you, Troy. Just surprised to see this, especially since there aren't too many 50's Indy vid's that I know of.

So true and if anyone is a fan of that era of racing, it's a must watch!

Has anyone seen "Winning" with Paul Newman? Centered around racing at Indianapolis....very good movie.

Also, +1 on Grand Prix and Le Mans!

Another GREAT movie is Bruce Brown's "On any Sunday." The movie is a documentary about motorcycle racing and it features my hero, Steve McQueen.

As a kid, I grew up riding/racing BMX bikes and motorcycles with my three step-brothers. When I was nine or ten when I rode my first mini-bike and my Dad bought me my first real motorcycle shortly thereafter. My step-father competed in Enduro's and as a family we rode pretty much every weekend; we even built a track next to our house.

As a kid I was mesmerized by this movie and it has always been one of my favorites. I watched it again about a year ago and I was transported back to my youth. If nothing else, it's worth watching just to see how far motorcycles and motorcycle racing has come since that time. Back in the day, motorcycles didn't have 12 inches of travel and you couldn't take jumps like Ryan Dungy...well, you could...but you'd most likely smash your package on the steel tank, compress a few vertebrae, and piss blood for a week.

Anyway, it's a pretty cool movie, even if you're not into the two-wheel racing and I highly recommend it. It was even nominated for an Oscar for best documentary.

I saw that xar thias last weekend at Road America. I even got a pic of my boy in the car, and then the ORIGINAL Indy driver of the car, Don Lee, happened by. He asked me who owned the car (without identifying himself). I told him Colin did, since my boy was in the car After laughing we took him over to the real owner of the car who was catching a nap in the shade, and who was VERY surprised. You can't make this stuff up!
