Default Forza 4 Historic Trans-Am Round 3 - Results, Recap, Stories

    Recap

The Trans Ams visited the red rocks and giant stadium at the Sedona Raceway Park. The beasts were really put to the test on Sedona's long oval section as well as the technical road section in this full verison of the track. Because of the long 4.1 mile distance, the race was lowered to 8 laps.

The muscle cars powering at full speed into the first banking caused an incident, and due to the speeds involved, a small bump turned into a chain reaction, where much of the field was picked up in the mess of spinning cars. This spread out the field a bit, but there was still lots of action and close racing midpack.

Scott Brizinski and Mike Waltz fought for the lead, and in the end was the victor with Mike only a few seconds behind. Ryan Smith took the last spot on the podium, making it an identical finish as the last round.

Scott's win widens his lead to 16 points in the standings, with Mike Waltz only 4 points ahead of Ryan Smith for second overall. There is lots of room for points battles with the spread between 2nd and 6th only separated by 10 points.

Unfortunately the replay cut off just before the last 2 finishers crossed the line. If anyone happens to have that data, I will update the results! I have awarded them a default time, which is the last time I have before the replay stopped. Also I have only seen the race replay, so do not have qualifying data at this time. Sorry about that, I will get a handle on this timing stuff, Forza is not making it easy on me!

There is one issue that has always been a problem for Xbox - NAT. Run a network test and see if you get any NAT errors. NAT types of strict and moderate can cause issues connecting to games, open NAT (no errors) is the way to go.

In my case, I have to set up my modem and router very specifically or else I get double NAT'ed. On race night, I plug directly into my broadband modem just in case, to remove my router as a factor.

There could be other issues too with the game and Live service, but the NAT issue is a biggie.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the connections. Once we get 10 or so in a lobby it's really hard to get the last few. I had to try about 15 times and I don't have any NAT issues or anything like that.

The first heat was pretty smooth. Although I bumped Cam off AGAIN. I owe that dude a beer or two. I remember Mark and Scott being ahead of me and they went wide in turn 2 (the first one you have to break for). I got past them and then I remember being behind Ryan. I could get close to him if I really pushed, but he was just too fast.

He has some really nice lines on this track, and if you want to learn how to drive it, watch his replay. He was definitely the fastest car out there last night. Real places like Road America I have been driving on virtually for 20 years or so, and I pretty much have all my lines perfected, but on these fantasy tracks I still have things to learn, and will be watching those replays.

Anyways Ryan pulled about 3 seconds ahead of me and I was settling for 2nd, but then he got tangled up with a lapped car on the last lap though, and I got close again, but couldn't pass him.

Second heat was crazy at the start. It looked like someone got caught down on the apron and shot up the banking going into turn 1. Smoke, cars spinning, and I found an opening and went through clean into 3rd. I had a good gap behind me, but the 1st and 2nd place cars were dicing it up and held me up quite a bit, so Scott closed the gap. I managed to get around into the lead towards the end of lap 1 and Scott was right behind me. I could pull away a little and then I'd make a mistake and he'd catch up. I think he was just waiting for me to screw up, and on Lap 6 and 7 I finally did, hitting the magic FM velcro dirt on the chicane leading to the back straight. Ryan had been caught in the schamozzle at the start, but he worked his way up and got close to me on the last lap and a half, but I kept it pretty smooth and he had a big tank slapper coming onto the oval, so I hung on to 2nd. A very patient and consistent (and fast) drive by Scott for that win.

I felt I was the fastest driver at Road America and was disappointed to be 2nd, but last night I think I was the third best car, and got 2nd, so I figure my luck evened out.

I was bummed that Cam got disconnected in the 2nd heat. Between me knocking him off the track and the connectivity, the guy can't catch a break.

I really think Turn 10 is pushing it with 16 players. As noted above once you get past ten it seems to get pretty hairy. I had to laugh when I heard someone mention it was like trying to connect to a DTR2 server. I was thinking the same thing. At least the cars don't fly through the air and wreck everyone.

Maybe if we have this many players or more next time we should just divide the race into two lobbies. If that's what will make the connections smoother, maybe we should try that. Definitely some good battles went on. I'm sorry we had such long troubles connecting. I'm also sorry Cam and Lance got punted out of the race. It looks like everyone had fun amongst the problems. And fun is the point.
