Default 2012 CMS Daytona 2.4 Post Race Results, Stories, and Recap

The 2012 Season has begun for racing here at Champion Motorsports, and in normal tradition it starts with the annual running of our Daytona 2.4 Hours Endurance Race, to celebrate the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and signaling the start of Engines Firing and Racing Beginning. This year's race was a huge success, with 27 drivers taking the green flag including twelve Daytona Prototypes and fifteen GT cars. Congratulations to our class winners, Frank Sumfleth for the overall win and P1 in Daytona Prototype Class, and Don Fryman for winning the GT Class.

Frank Sumfleth leads a group of cars through Turn 1 at Daytona (above)

This years race saw the first time that we simulated an exact start type from the real world series. We had a manual start for a formation/pace lap with the Daytona Prototypes going out first and then approximately 15 seconds later the GT field taking the green flag. It worked really well and allowed for two races to really develop in the early stages of the event. The start also led to a high number of cars finishing the race, with a total of 18 of 27 running at completion of the 2 Hours and 24 minutes.

The theme for the night out front was a dominance by the Porsche Power Plant with Porsche Engines taking 3 of the top 4 positions by end of race in the Prototype Class. With Frank taking the overall victory Neal Johnson was in close pursuit in 2nd place for most of the night where he would finish. John Nelson, in the Lexus Riley would take 3rd on the podium, and then would be followed by another Porsche driven by Andre Kroenert. Completing the top 5 in class was David Anderson in another Lexus Riley.

Don Fryman got his win in his familar Corvette C6, that was really hooked up and able to have the perfect balance between the Super Speedway and the Infield Road Course. He battled for a long time in the race with Dwayne Jans in the Aston Martin, but with Dwayne having to leave the event before completion, Don was able to cruise in the later portion of the race to the win.

Fryman and his Vette Looking Sharp at Daytona (above)

Brad Wrenn in another Corvette would have a fantastic run of his own to finish in P2 within the GT class. Brad drove a mistake free race and it paid off for a great result. Behind Brad and Don in the Vette's were a couple of Volvo's hooked up by the excellent driving of Glen Luening and Paul Hamilton. Completing the top five in class for the GT cars was Stuart Barge in the Mustang Cobra.

Overall the event was another big success and a very good start to our 2012 racing season here at Champion. We would like to offer special thanks to The Champion Fun Series members and division drivers that always go out of their way to attend this event and make it so much fun. Additionally we'd like to thank Brad Wrenn for compiling the car pack for the race. And last but not least our sponsor for the race Motorsport Collector. We will be announcing shortly the winners of our two gift cards. Thanks to everyone that attended, and congrats to all the winners, podiums, and finishers. Lets have a great 2012 here at CMS!

    Cya on the Track!

Well that really stunk.. evidently had a high ping according to David, which i just can't understand. Didn't turn a lap..although it probably wasn't meant to be anyway-house was fairly active-I would have had to pit a few times to play 'daddy' and 'dearest'...

Consoled myself with a really good Spanish red and made lasagna.

    See you guys next time....

Someone said it was me with high ping, but I left and came back in practice and everyone in the room was less than 100, then Glen joined and everyone went to over 400. Game was snyncing the entire race. I was very lucky to finish 3rd. Great battles with the 2 in front of me until the pit stops. Then they pulled a gap. I'll have to figure that one out. GREAT FUN. I never did one of these races before.

Good tuneup for the upcoming season. Had fun with Claudio and Jim Stainer during the first stint. I thought both the DPs and GTs did a great job tonight with traffic. Gives me a positive feeling for the battles in the Lemans Series this season. Tom Cav
