Default MoTeC Basics Change - Please Read

If you plan on attending the Motec presentation this evening, please note the following change...

We will not be using Microsoft SharedView. There is an issue with SharedView and Internet Explorer 9 that causes SharedView to crash. I was not able to get it to work.

Therefore, we are going to use Mikogo. I have read favorable reviews and was able to get this running with little effort. The good news is you will not have to install anything. Simply connect to Teamspeak prior to the start of the presentation and I will provide the link and password. Mikogo will run a simple program that will connect you to the visual presentation.

Cool, now I don't have to boot into Windows to attend tonight, since both Teamspeak and Mikogo run on the Mac.

One additional note... Mikogo limits the number of participants to 10, compared to 14 with SharedView. Based on response, we should be okay, but you may want to login early. I plan to have the session available by 7:30 PM Central (30 minutes prior to the session).

I will also be posting the session information in this thread.

Thanks so much for running that session last night Jim. That sort of basic info was just what I was needing. Didn't say much after my wife went to bed, or I would have said so when it was over. Sure cleared up a bunch of questions.

Really great session last night, I put it right to work after the class.

I wasn't expecting it to go so long, there may be enough content there to break it up into two parts, the install, setup, projects, and data acquisition as one session, then a second session on getting started interpreting some data points. I immediately set it all up after getting off TS, but once I got it up and running was struggling to remember all the cool stuff I could look at (info overload). I think if I had gotten it set up and played around and got familiar with it before you went into interpreting the data I would have retained more of that part of the session.

To give an example of how I was able to use it immediately: One thing I always wonder about is my shift points and being in the proper gear in a given corner. So I loaded up Circuit de la Sarthe (which I do not recommend for a first track to do this on, but that is another story) and got to work. After a leisurely drive thru the French countryside doing my reference laps, I did 3 laps, an out lap and 2 timed laps. Loaded up the IMLS GT project and found that I was over revving the engine constantly!

This lead me to lower the rev limiter and take much more care when downshifting, so with my first two laps with Motec I was able to use the concepts from your session. Really useful to have the data right there to help refine my driving and setup.

    Couple questions:

    1) Reference lap, are these done automatically, or do they have to be created specifically by using the File -> Create reference lap menu item? You may have mentioned this and I missed it

    2) Using engine.ini to get powerband info: I can see the mapping between RPM and torques, but what is the general rule for extracting the power band? Some percentage of maximum power?

Regarding power band, the lower limit is generally (ie for most engines) the RPM with peak torque, and the upper limit is the RPM with peak HP. As discussed, sometimes you have to fudge those limits a bit. For example the peak torque might be too high a lower limit on a low reving torque engine (diesel), while the peak torque might be too high a lower limit on a screaming rev engine like an F1. There are tools on RFC that allow you to graph the engine file at torque and HP curves....seeing it graphically will generally tell you were to draw the limits.

Finally I'm calling those limits because of how we graph them in motec, but as we discussed they are really guides. The only real limit is the rev limit in the engine file. Exceed that number too much and the engine goes boom!
