Team CMS SCCA Autocross Team checking in for our regular report, and boy was it an exciting one this time out. For the 4th event of the year we went sliding, I mean racing at Texas Motor Speedway in our 2012 JCW Mini. Raining was a nice way to put it, it was full on hydro-plane material on the track but we not only survived, we ended up with respectable finishes.

The first 2 heats of the day had very pour track and rain conditions. Our draw was heat 2 and as you can see from our videos our wiper blades were faster than our car. But this proved to be a very valuable learning experience as we got great time racing in the rain under our belts, and also got to start working on what to do with the car setup in wet conditions. So it was educational for sure.

David managed to break our team record of spins (previously held by Phil with 1) ... with not one, but two full on 360's. He learned pretty much the hard way that turning in early and trail braking was not going to work in these conditions. To make it a little more slippery we also had a new rear end anti-roll bar installed in the car, adding about 300% more rear rotation n our Front Wheel Drive Machine. So, let's just say the combination of the wet, and the new bar put a lot of variables at us.

Phil was the more consistent and steady of the team this week with no spins, and improvement on almost every run, yielding his best run on the last time out. He would track a 63.766, which was good for 60 of 133 in PAX, and 3 of 4 in class. Note, we had the perfect storm of competition in our class this week as we were up against 2 Subaru WRX AWD Cars for this event. As previously mentioned the first 2 heats were run in full wet. Heat 3 was still pretty slick but the rain begin to let up significantly about halfway through the heat. By heat 4 it was drying and the 4th heat drivers had 3 of their 5 runs on a totally dry line. If we strip out those 4th heat times, Phil was into the top 25% for the day, against drivers in relative conditions.

David was a little more erratic on the track this week, but when he got it right it was relatively fast. He would manage to track a 62.355 time, which was within a second of the really fast guys we measure our self against reality wise. This equated to 47/133 in Pax, and into the top 20 percentile for the day if we stripped out the dry line drivers. He would end up losing out of the top spot in class by about 4 tenths, and have to settle for 2nd. This was the first SCCA event of the year that one of the Team CMS didn't take the top trophy spot in class. The Subaru Driver that beat us came over to make himself known and indicated he appreciated the good race and will be back for more. So looks like we have someone ready to give us a test in future events in the class.

Here is a pretty entertaining video of David's fastest run of the day, that he thought was his slowest. This is his last run out, knowing he needed to get the Subaru on this run, and after a solid start, he got a little ahead in the Slalom, and it was over from there. He started pushing and over drove it in the 2nd sector. At the end it about comes around at the finish line, but he holds on to it and you can hear the frustration over the radio.

On the bright side of things we got a much expected COLD day in June! The weather was in the lower 70's and with the water it was a bit chilly actually. When it came time for our work assignment on the track in heat 4 we weren't minding that it had rained earlier. We got a nice set of cooling conditions which made for a relatively easy work assignment.

Our next event is in about a month from now and we'll be back with a regular report!

Here is a quick look at season standings for D-Street through 4 events

    1 - David Anderson - 34 (3 wins in class)
    2 - Phil Elmore - 20 (4 straight podiums)
    3 - Chris Garcia - 12 (2 podiums)
    4 - Larry Wolfe - 11
    5 - Dan Olson - 10
6 - Erick Van Houton - 9 (First Class Win in Event 4)
    7 - Jeff Walker Medina - 7

No rest for the wicked. The cmsracing.com Autocross Team was back on the track this past weekend here in Texas Region SCCA! We are so fortunate to have one of the largest, and most competitive SCCA Solo Regions in the Country and it makes for a great time when we get out. We were really sporting the CMS Racing Pride this week with official logos on the car for our community and sponsorship. We've also been actively recruiting folks to the site while at the events as well and will continue to do so.

Please go to our facebook page to get some great pictures of the car!

As far as the event goes, it was another solid showing for Phil and David. We both held our own and again took top 2 in D-Street Class. Beating 2 Suburu WRX cars this week. This course was very technical and had a very long slalom for 6+ cones at the end. It did give us some fits, but did the same for lots of other drivers. David would take top honors this week by a slim .381 over Phil in 2nd. We both were 2 seconds faster than the Subaru's so that was a nice feeling. We did not PAX as high in this event as we would have liked, with David 71 and Phil 76 of 165. But we were solidly on the right side of the mid point for the day. We were also a very solid top 3rd of all Street Entries with David 18 or 63 and Phil 20 of 63.

We had a buddy help us with some very valuable tire readings with his Pyrometer which is another great data point for us.

Here are the videos from this week. These are our fastest CLEAN runs. We had faster times, but cones in the slalom previously mentioned bit us.
