TransAm Mustangs double header at Road Atlanta brings surprises, comebacks and victories for Gary Tautfest and Marc Cohn

    Write-up by Patrice Cote

The Mustangs have been popular for 50 years and it seems its also true at CMS HIstorics racing where a very good turnout promised lots of action on the Road Atlanta track.

The first race was won by Gary. But the second time around things didn't go as planned for many front row drivers and newcomer Marc Cohn superb drive allows him to clinch his first victory here at CMS.

    First Race
    Qualification 1

Good ol' southern sunshine gave conditions on the hot side for the first qualification. Gary Tautfest clinched the pole in 1:41.065 over a full second over Robert Beck and Brent Arthurs.

    Race 1

Gary took charge from the start in front of Robert and Brent. Lots of traffic in the first few laps. When racers just started to settle in, big clouds moved in for a five minute shower. The Trans Am being slippery to start with, just got slippier!

At the checkered flag, it's Gary T, Robert and Gary Huff. Well done guys!

    Second Race
    Qualification 2

Less extreme track temperature made cars faster for the second qualification... including the already fast Gary T - 1:40.783 is the new track record! The five next drivers are in the 1:42's, Jim Carvalho being the fastest of them.

    Race 2

Even if the start appeared to be fairly normal, the track marshalls apparently saw Gary T and Robert slightly move before the start. Both got a pit stop penalty on the very first lap. Gary Huff, who started 5th, gets into the lead in front of Jim.

On the 6th lap Marc Cohn, who came from the back of the pack with his 9th spot on the grid passes Jim in second place. On the 11th lap, Gary Huff is caught up by Marc.

Meanwhile, Gary T and Robert climb back in the standing. Amazingly, Gary T with two laps to go is able to come back on Marc to challenge him for the 1st place. Last lap, Gary makes his move on the back stretch... Marc hangs on and wins by a car length! Wow!
Jim completes the podium in thrid place.

So for the championship Gary leads with 36 pts with Marc following not far behind at 32 pts.

I think those Trans Am are an absolute blast and I'm looking forward for more!

In the meanwhile we'll have our enduro at Le Mans next week !!!!!

    See you on the track!

April Dillon wins season ending enduro at Solitude Historics Prototypes race

    Writeup by Patrice Cote

The last event of the winter-spring season of the Historics Prototypes series was a test of stamina and concentration. The treacherous forest road of Solitude has plenty of tricks to catch unwary drivers.

That being said, one thing was clear, this road has no secret for April Dillon, just look at the lap times made during this the perfect 2 hour run.

The overall season Championship was clinched by Robert Beck, who makes it a habit to score a win or podium at just about ...

Road Atlanta hosted its first race in 1970. Since then, the track has hosted everything from Can-Am to ALMS. The track has 2 famous sections, the esses of T3-5 and the diving, downhill T12. Many of Road Atlanta turns are blind, and I have always loved the rhythm of the track ...

This year being the Ford Mustang 50th anniversary, to celebrate appropriately the Historics team thinks bringing them back in their original glory days is the best tribute. We'll race'em hard and smoke some tyres like they used to!
But for an endurance race in June, one place instantly pops in mind ... Le Mans! So taking a pause from the pony cars, there is a Le Mans special event inserted in the schedule with all the pre-1968 ...

Jim Carvalho and Patrice Cote split the Bridgehampton double-header of Historics Prototypes series

    Write-up by Patrice Cote

Even if the spotlight is on the duel for first place for the overall championship, Jim Carvalho and Patrice Cote seized their chance to shine at Bridgehampton, each winning a race in very closely fought events.

The now gone mythical circuit of Long Island is a true golden era track. It's very fast, it has big elevation ...

Robert Beck victorious at Donnington in the first race of Historics Prototypes series

    Special report by Patrice Cote

The second half of the season got underway at Donnington with a duel between the 60's emblematic GT40 and the lightweight Porsche 906. It may look like the GT40 has an unfair power advantage, but that's would be poorly knowing what's the resourceful 906 is capable of.

Robert Beck was impressive with his cool dark ...

Historics GT's Enduro in Rouen won by Robert Beck, also takes the lead for the championship

    Special report by Patrice Cote

On the old Rouen track Robert Beck made good use of long straights to display the Corvette power and set a pace none could match. The big question mark was race stategy. Could a less thirsty car make it to the finish line first by spending less time in the pits?

And there are other perils, such a track with virtually no runoffs ...
